Author Services

Looking for author services? I have offered a wide-range of services for many years to both aspiring and established writers. Due to my online teaching course load, I now offer this more limited range of services to new clients.

How can I help you reach your writing, editing, publishing or book marketing goals? You don’t have to go it alone.

Consulting

Need trustworthy expert knowledge about writing, editing, publishing or marketing? I can answer your questions and provide time and money-saving options to your decision-making process. My hourly fee is $55 with a one hour minimum in advance. Session time is not transferable.

I consult with clients by either email, telephone or face-to-face by video Skype.  The time can be spent in any way you wish. I will answer any questions, help you define your strategy, make recommendations. I often email additional resources to clients after the session.

Contact me here and tell me briefly about your needs. Let me how you want to communicate and the best times (2 or 3 options, including evenings if you wish), and I’ll get back to you promptly.

Substantive (Developmental) Editing

Substantive editing is an evaluation and critique of your book. You receive:

  • A helpful evaluation of your writing style from an objective point of view.
  • A positive critique of specific elements you can change to make your book better.
  • A professional opinion about your book’s potential for commercial success.

No canned material or generic commentary—you get a personalized, objective  appraisal of your book. My goal is to help you create a book you will be proud to publish.

I read your manuscript carefully and prepare a 8-25 page report (it depends on the length of your book and the number of issues I discover), noting strengths and weaknesses and offering detailed suggestions for improvement.  See my credentials here.

My fee for substantive editing is $395 for up to 60,000 words. Add $12 for each thousand words beyond 60,000. Word count is based on Microsoft Word statistics.

A completed first draft is strongly preferred. You may send a work-in-progress if it is well along, but your fee pays for a one-time evaluation, not an ongoing evaluation of your progress.

Contact me here and tell me briefly about your needs. I’ll get back to you promptly.

Copy (Line) Editing

The main goal of all editing is clarity. I do that by verifying your manuscript is clear, correct and concise. Each sentence is examined to make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation is correct, and that you are conveying your ideas as you intended.

Copy editing your book manuscript, any length over 10,000 words—just 2.5 cents per word. To compute the fee: Word Count (from Microsoft Word) x .025 = copy editing fee.

Bookcraft

I have been doing bookcraft for many years because I enjoy it and do professional quality work.

Print

Interior book design including layout and typography. Your book will be completed to the  technical specification of your target POD or other printer.

Fee starts at $395* I design the interior of your book using Adobe InDesign, normally in 5.8 x 8.5 or 6 x 9 trade paperback format, or other sizes. It includes professional page design, pagination and typography (see samples below). The work includes front and back matter and individual chapters. Completed project files are usually available for your review in 5-7 business days or less.

The process – I receive your edited book manuscript file in Word format or RTF if you have used another word processor. I create a sample design and after I get your approval, Icomplete the project based on that approved sample. No material changes are made for the stated price after the approval.

Quality print book design and typesetting gives your readers a better experience. We make sure your book layout and “look” enhances your content.

*There is an extra charge if your book has more than 250 finished book-sized pages or has more than 5 interior images. Please contact me for pricing if your book exceeds these limits.

To get a fixed quote (no surprise price increases later), let me know your finished book size (6 x 9, 8.5 x 11 or whatever it may be), your word count, whether or not your manuscript has already been carefully edited, the number of interior images (if any) and if they are at least 300 dpi each. This information will enable me to confirm that I can do the book for the minimum price.

Note: You are responsible to check all aspects of the book before it is printed. I deliver the book in the approved high-res digital format layout requested by the book printer you designate. I am extremely familiar with the technical requirements of all the major companies and guarantee the body of the book file will pass their technical “preflight.”

eBooks

Formatting – $169. I use the edited, proofread Word file you send us (or RTF file if you use another word processor) and create the different eBook formats you need for:

  • Amazon.com –  I use Amazon’s KINDLE FORMAT 8 (KF8) which is a more sophisticated way of formatting eBooks than the old Kindle MOBI method. It is a far better format for both legacy Kindles, the new Kindle HD format and for all tablets using a Kindle App.
  • Barnes and Noble/Nook and othersd – EPUB.
  • Apple’s iStore – EPUB. (Note: Client to supply ebook ISBN required by Apple or contact us about getting one)

Virtually all eBook stores (including Google Books) use one or both of the files listed above. Get the eBook file formatting you need to help make your eBook a success. You get all the file formats you need at no extra charge.

The processClick here and tell me briefly about your needs. I’ll get back to you promptly. I’ll have your formatted files ready in 3-4 business days or less.  Price includes 2 runs so you can make minor corrections if needed.

If you have a cover, I’ll include that cover image at no extra charge. Otherwise, I use a text title page or a cover image you supply.

Once I  have formatted your file, you can follow the upload instructions at Amazon or other sites where you want to sell your book. Use this hourly consulting link if you need further marketing instruction or advice.

eBook Notes

Images and tables: There is an additional charge for other images (beyond the cover) that you want included in your eBook. Contact me for a quote. Ebook formats do not accommodate tables very well. Tables appear best if they are made into images. I can do that for you.

Page Replica: There is a high-end type of formatting called “Page Replica” which renders the look of a printed book page on some eBook readers. This type of formatting is currently only available for textbook publishers by special agreement with Amazon. It cannot be done using a normally formatted PDF file.

Multimedia: Many people want to add audio and video to their eBooks. This is possible in ePub format, but not Kindle (Mobi/K8). However, they still cannot be viewed on most e-readers and comprise a very small portion of the market–about 4%– as of this writing (Dec. 2016). Because of the severe limitation in multimedia file formats and e-reader/tablet compatibility, we are not creating them until we can meet client expectations across most platforms.  Contact me if you have questions about the newest developments in this quickly changing field.
